The Finnish Mathematics and Science Education Research Association (FMSERA) was formed at the national symposium on Research in Mathematics Education held in Turku, in August 1983. Correspondingly, first national symposium on Research in Science Education was organised in Oulu, in November 1984. First common symposium in the field of science and mathematics education research was organised in Jyväskylä in September 1987. Thereafter, annual symposiums have been organised together with researchers with interest in science or mathematics education research.

The aims of FMSERA are to promote collaboration in mathematics and science education research between researchers in Finland as well as to strengthen links between researchers in Europe and similar communities elsewhere in the world and, furthermore to publish research papers. FMSERA provides a forum for discussion about practices and policies of mathematics and science education researchers and to relate research to the policy and practice of science education.

Based on aims of FMSERA annual symposiums offer researchers in mathematics and science education an opportunity to present their active research projects and become familiar with international research. It is typical that a couple of foreign researchers are invited to the national symposiums. Typically, national presentations are given in the field of science and mathematics teacher education; teaching and learning in science and mathematics; teachers beliefs or knowledge; students conceptions; ICT in science or mathematics education or teacher educationM and history of science, mathematics or science and mathematics education. Moreover, different research oriented development projects in the field of science and mathematics education or teacher education are presented.

The presenters of annual symposium are invited to submit a paper based on their presentation to be published in the proceedinds. All papers published in the proceedings of the FMSERA annual symposium are peer-reviewed and licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License
