Abstrakti

In this article, we analyze applied linguistics or language studies in Finland by focusing on the distinctions between disciplines, research areas, schools of thought, institutions and organizations. Our data consists of interviews conducted in 2015 and 2016 with key actors (N=20) in the field and a panel discussion held at the AFinLA autumn symposium in 2015 on Applied Linguistics in Finland Now and in the Future. In addition to these interviews, the material includes an interview with Kari Sajavaara on the subject dating from 2003. We analyzed the data using content analysis from the perspectives of discipline, studies, schools of thought, institution and organization identified by science studies and higher education research. The main justification for the status of applied linguistics and language studies as an independent discipline emerged from its institutional and organizational status. Organizational discourse and justifications were strongly intertwined with the disciplinary basis.
