Applied research of languages in Finland prior to establishing AFinLA in 1970

This article presents the founding and promulgation of AFinLA in its context. AFinLA was a pioneer in the establishment of modern infrastructures for academic language studies in Finland and part of the linguistification of language studies in Finland, a gradual change from historically and philologically minded studies to more linguistically and synchronically oriented ones that started in 1965. Relevant applicationally-related work prior to 1970 include: codifying Standard Finnish, teaching of Finnish as a second or a foreign language, internationally unique work on General Grammar for school teaching purposes done by two Grammar Committees, and the discussion in the late 1800s on developing the practices of foreign language teaching along the principles formulated by Viëtor’s reform movement. The applied linguistic work of Nils Erik Enkvist in the 1960s is presented, as is the publication series AFTIL at the English Department of Åbo Akademi University. Kalevi Wiik’s dissertation Finnish and English Vowels in 1965 is discussed as a forerunner of applied linguistics. Activities by the Finns in the Nordic Summer University are analysed.
