The article explores the presence of research on learning and teaching Finnish as a mother tongue (F1) or second language (F2) in the publications of AFinLA from 1970 to date. In the early years of AFinLA, the focus was on foreign languages. The first article discussing learning F1 was published in 1977, the first Finnish L2 article in 1987. Since 1988 the number of F2 studies has consistently been the same or larger than those on F1. To explain this, the development of F2 teaching and research is briefly presented, followed by some reasons why AFinLA has been important for F2 researchers and teachers. Chapter 4 discusses the role of AFinLA in the internationalization of the Finnish language research community. Finally, the co-development of F1 and F2 research is described as a continuum from F1 only to two separate spheres of study, and recently the two getting closer to each other again.
