The article recounts the development of language assessment in Finland since the early 1970s. The field’s rise to one of the most active areas of research and development in Finnish applied linguistics can be traced back to the establishment of the Institute for Educational Research, the university-based language centre system, and the AFinLA itself. These provided both work opportunities and publication venues for language educators interested in assessment. The article first describes how changes in conceptualising language and learning have influenced assessments and then details the developments in language assessment in Finland with reference to different assessment uses. Despite being an active area of research, only a small number of individuals actually specialise in language assessment in Finland. Due to decades long work on assessment, and particularly because of the National Certificates examination, University of Jyväskylä has become the most prominent site of language assessment research in the country.
