The article discusses conceptualisations of ’language’ and ’learning’ in Finnish applied linguistics, particularly focussing on the research themes in AFinLA (The Finnish Association of Applied Linguistics) publications and events during 1970–2020. The paper shows how the conceptualisation of language has changed over the years from a homogeneous, boundaried language towards views that highlight its diverse, heteroglossic nature. Similarly, the concept of learning that originally forefronted learning-by-instruction has grown towards recognition of the diverse environments, modalities and ways of learning therein. However, it is argued that the research field is not easily characterised by clear paradigmatic changes. Rather, it will be suggested that the period consists of different flows where long-established traditions and new theoretical innovations are entangled. Finally, the scarcity of metatheoretical discussion will be observed and its further discussion will be encouraged.
