Abstrakti

The relations between the global and the local, the centre and peripheries are complex and changeable. Research precedes its organisations, thus applied linguistics must be older than its first mention 100 years ago by the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), which included it among the three major domains of linguistic inquiry. Applied linguistics was to provide a scientific basis for addressing language-related issues in society. This fundamental task has changed little in a hundred years though undergone significant proliferation of domains, along with the multiplication of related organisations. The global organisation can be regarded as a relative centre, together with major research countries. This article addresses the Finnish Association for Applied Linguistics (AFinLA) and its international parent organisation AILA, over some decades, relating their developments to simultaneous research trends. These reflect wider issues of globality and locality in research policies, suggesting some ensuing perils of excessive weight on the centre.
