AFinLA was founded in 1970, and since then, it has played a significant role in developing applied linguistics in Finland, as well as in building international co-operation in the field. AFinLA has brought together generations of researchers and warmly welcomed language professionals outside the research community. AFinLA has always been an active participant in its global umbrella organization AILA and cooperated regionally within Europe. Furthermore, international researchers have regularly been invited to its symposia, and AFinLA members encouraged to participate in international events. This article gives a brief introduction of how AFinLA has developed in the past 50 years, reflecting the discussions and dominant language-related themes in society along the way. We also refer to articles in this volume that explore the work of Finnish applied linguists and AFinLA. The texts illustrate the influence AFinLA and its members have had on language policies and language awareness in Finland. The work goes on!
