In this review, I examine queer linguistics as part of language research and its relationship to queer theory. I outline the development of queer linguistics through three waves of sociolinguistic research and, drawing on literature, demonstrate how language produces, maintains, and challenges normative conceptions of gender and sexuality. Special attention is given to the concept of the closet and the linguistic representations of coming out, as well as to queer practices of seeking companionship, in which discourses of desire, the closet, and heteronormative ideals intertwine. Finally, I reflect on how queer linguistics introduces a critical and intersectional perspective to language research, revealing how norms shape identity construction and interaction. At the same time, queer linguistics opens up new research avenues within applied linguistics, particularly concerning norm-critical pedagogy, language policy, and the visibility of diversity.
