Abstract

The chemical composition of Pito potatoes at different N, P, and K fertilizer rates was studied over a three year period (1967, 1968 and 1970) at the Plant Breeding Institute of Hankkija, Anttila Experimental Farm. The dry matter and starch contents of the potatoes varied greatly from year to year, mostly at the beginning of the growing period. N applications delayed the accumulation of dry matter and starch in tubers. The N content varied from year to year. It was highest at the beginning and the end of the growing period. N applications greatly increased the N content of tubers. The P content showed very great annual variations. It rose toward the end of the growing period although less so than the dry matter content. N applications decreased the P content, P applications increased it. The K content of potatoes varied less from year to year. It increased toward the end of the growing period although more slowly than did the dry matter content. It was increased by K and partly increased by N applications. The Ca content of tubers showed great annual variations. It decreased toward the end of the growing period. N applications decreased, P applications increased it. The Mg content of tubers was very dependent on lifting time being highest at the end of the growing period. N and P applications decreased it.
