Abstract

In the fictional Swedish countryside, poaching activities have been rampant since the 1950s. In the Swedish comic book 91:an Karlsson, the characters 91:an, Åsa-Nisse, and Kronblom have made life miserable for the local authorities by insisting on fishing and hunting whenever they feel like it.

This article discusses comic book narratives about hunting and fishing from the Swedish comic book 91:an Karlsson as a kind of masculine, rural resistance. The article aims to show how hunting and fishing are used to construct counter-narratives (Nilsson 2020). Through a close reading (Pöysä 2015) of the narrated depiction of ‘right and wrong’ and the positioning of the characters (Bamberg 2003; Löfgren 2020), I show how hunting and fishing are used in stories of resistance to authority.

The article concludes that stories are constructed through a combination of the emancipatory function of resistance narratives and the humorous resistance of the trickster motif (Weaver, S., & Mora, R. A. 2015), turning 91:an, Kronblom, and Åsa-Nisse into trickster folk heroes. The narratives depict the perennial triumph of brains over brawn, la sagesse des petits” (Klapp 1949:20), challenging views of ‘right and wrong’ and the notion of an overly rule-governed existence.
