The architectural interior acts as a container for small-scale objects to room-size surfaces. Replicating these elements spans artisanal hand craft methods to digital 3D scanning. These methods of replication can be compared through variables in processes and outcomes. Plaster casting ateliers replicating sculptures and architectural ornamentation started in the mid-1800s when museums sought to expand collections and make works available to the public. The original plaster piece molds used to create replicas included up to a dozen or more interlocking parts, similar to a three-dimensional puzzle. The more parts to the mold, the better the resolution of the finished sculpture, which in turn, relied on the erasure and disappearance of seams between pieces. The evolution of technology ushered in 3D scanning, which also relies upon shared concepts where background data is pieced together like a puzzle to produce a digital model. Similar to plaster, the digital model shares the need for seam erasure between individual scans. This paper looks to these methods of reproduction and background information intended for erasure while noting shared concepts spanning analog to digital reproduction. The elements of erasure are also highlighted as opportunities for providing alternative views.
