Patient safety includes healthcare organization’s and its personnel’s principles and actions, which secure the safety of care and protect the patient from harm. The safety of care in emergency department has effects on patients’ treatment pathway and the care results. Rapid development in different areas of healthcare brings new competence requirements for personnel also in the emergency department. The aim of this study was to determine holistic patient safety competence needs in emergency department care. Voluntary research participants (n=15) were interviewed. Data were analyzed with inductive theme analysis. The study found that staff’s perceptions of patient safety varied from concrete to abstract. Challenges in ensuring patient safety were identified widely. The staff proposed several solutions to improve patient safety. Based on the study results a holistic model of patient safety competences was developed.
