Narcissistic Leadership in Social and
Health Care
Narcissistic behavior is complex and destructive,
but problematic is to consider when recruiting
leaders. This article discusses narcissistic leadership in social and health care organizations.
The research is based on material collected from
managers in Finnish health care (N=422), that
was collected by visual frame story from 15
health sector organizations in Finland 2010 to
2014. Questions determining narcissistic leadership behavior were used to provide a variable,
according to which the leaders were divided into
non-narcissistic and narcissistic leaders.
As a result, it was found that about 58%
(n=247) of executives have a narcissistic feature
in their leadership behavior. The narcissistic
leader has difficulty in identifying elements of
narcissism, empathy, legitimate power, self-management, goal setting and immaterial rewards.
Organizations need adequate controlled structures and transformation of leader’s attitude to
intervene in narcissistic leadership in time.
