Collegial and managerial management
in Finnish universities
This article is based on the Changing Academic
Profession Survey conducted in Finland in
2007–2008. In the article, the two major
types of management in Finnish universities
(managerial and collegial) are studied, and the
effects of management on academic work are
examined. The article questions the dichotomist
view of management in universities and argues
that collegial and managerial management each
include distinct cultural and structural aspects
that should not be confused with each other.
