Resilience among Finnish individuals with a colorectal cancer diagnosis: a cross-sectional study

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to describe resilience and related background characteristics among Finns with a colorectal cancer diagnosis. A total of 650 participants were invited. Data were collected in 2021 using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale© (CD-RISC-25)
and analyzed using independent samples T-tests, Analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The study followed the STROBE Checklist for cross-sectional studies.
The mean resilience of the participants (n=88) was 73.22 (range 0-100). Older age, male gender,
not having received chemotherapy, and longer time since diagnosis were related to better
resilience across several CD-RISC item scores. Of these, ability to adapt to change was related
to both, to older age and male gender, and age also to the total resilience score (p≤0.05).
Participants` low resilience levels reflect possible need for psycho-social support. Especially
younger and female patients, patients undergoing chemotherapy, and patients at the early
phases of cancer need more support.
