The climate is changing, biodiversity is declining, and there are challenges in the availability of water, food, energy, and raw materials. Science diplomacy is one of the tools that can be used to address these interconnected global challenges. In 2012, the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) at the University of Helsinki launched the Pan-Eurasian Experiment (PEEX) initiative, which involves extensive research collaboration with countries stretching from Finland across Siberia to East Asia. However, in February 2022, Russia's invasion of Ukraine ended official cooperation and disrupted the flow of essential environmental and climate data from Russia. This issue extends beyond simply research collaboration and data exchange in a specific scientific field. Without effective environmental actions and international climate commitments, we will not be able to face future threats. Science diplomacy is a crucial tool in this regard. INAR emphasizes the importance of collaborative measurements and open data, as they play a key role in securing the future of humanity.
