Abstract

In early childhood education and care, it is important to provide both group-based and individually tailored early and needs-based support to promote children's well-being and social development. Recent research emphasizes that supporting socio-emotional and behavioral skills is most effective when implemented systematically and through evidence-based methods. One such support model is Check in Check out (CICO), which has been shown to be effective in promoting appropriate behavior in school settings. However, research on its applicability in early childhood education and care remains limited. This study examined the effectiveness and acceptability of the CICO intervention in Finnish early childhood education units implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework (named ProVaka). The study was conducted using a single-case experimental design. Behavioral changes in three children were followed during the CICO intervention based on evaluations provided by early childhood education and care staff. The results indicate that appropriate target behavior increased in all three children. The extent to which the positive effects were generalized across different situations, as well as the associated reduction in problem behavior, varied individually. The staff members who implemented the intervention rated its social validity as high, indicating strong acceptability and practical usability. These findings suggest that CICO intervention is a promising support model in early childhood education.
