Abstrakti

Attitudes towards German National Socialism remain problematic, being both politically and emotionally charged. National Socialism is still one of the “lenses” through which Germanness is viewed. This applies to National Socialism in general and National Socialist education in particular. This article provides an outline of National Socialist pedagogy on a general level. It examines the ideological starting points of National Socialist education and the pedagogical views of its leading proponents with the aim of understanding National Socialist pedagogical thought. The essential core of National Socialist pedagogics is scrutinised in relation to what is considered to be “good” from the point of view of the human being, with an interpretation of whether National Socialist education should be regarded as a pedagogy or a “non-pedagogy”, i.e. no pedagogy at all. The main sources of this article consist of research-based literature. Further sources include published documents of the speeches of the leading representatives of National Socialist political leaders and pedagogues, the pedagogical National Socialist literature of the time and memoirs.
