Abstrakti

Tässä artikkelissa tarkastellaan kymmentä metaforaa, joilla kansainvälistä politiikkaa usein kuvaillaan ja selitetään. Artikkeli paneutuu kansainväliseen politiikkaan luonnonvalintana, perhesuhteina, tasapainotteluna, rakentamisena, leikkinä tai pelinä, kaupankäyntinä, matkustamisena, musiikkiesityksinä, terveydenhoitona ja arvoituksina. Se tarjoaa esimerkkejä metaforien käytöstä asiantuntijakonteks­teissa – tutkijoiden, ulkopoliittisten johtajien ja median teksteissä – pohtien niin metaforien herättämiä assosiaatioita kuin niiden mukanaan kantamia toimintamalleja. Metaforien tarkastelu on artikkelissa jaettu kahteen osioon: ensin vuorossa ovat metaforien konfliktuaaliset, synkkiin tulkintoihin ja agg­ressiivisiin toimiin kannustavat versiot ja sitten yhteistyötä petaavat ja positiivisia tulkintoja suosivat versiot. Metaforien runsautta ja kurittomuutta pidetään artikkelissa voimavarana: kansainvälistä politiikkaa voidaan metaforien avulla mahdollisesti ohjata nykyistä rauhanomaisempaan suunta
