Canudon estetiikka ei nojaudu mihinkään yhteen taiteenfilosofiseen malliin, vaan on yhdistelmä, jota varten eri esteettisten mallien elementtejä on vapaasti tulkittu uudelleen.

The Seventh Art: On Ricciotto Canudo’s Film Aesthetics

The article examines the film aesthetics of Italian-French Ricciotto Canudo (1877–1923) and, in particular, Canudo’s idea of film as a synthesis of the arts, the “seventh art,” combining the spatial arts (architecture, sculpture, painting) and the temporal arts (music, poetry, dance). Canudo presented the first version of his model in 1908 but established it in 1921–1923. Canudo’s thinking was also influenced by his central role in the modernist art and film circles of Paris before and after World War I.

Canudo’s model is based on the “system of the arts” (P. O. Kristeller) established in the latter half of the 18th century, and the separation and classification of the arts within that framework. Lessing, Hegel, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche’s aesthetics have been suggested as influences on Canudo. However, critical views on Canudo’s aesthetic-philosophical background are partly contradictory. Canudo’s aesthetics do not rely on any single model of aesthetics but are a combination of freely reinterpreted elements from different models.

In addition, the ideas of Canudo’s life partner and colleague Valentine de Saint-Point on the fusion of the arts, her distinction between mobile and immobile arts, and her emphasis on the importance of dance are also part of the background to Canudo’s model. Canudo’s synthetic thinking is not limited to the synthesis of different art forms in film. For Canudo, film is also a synthesis of science and art, as well as tradition and modernity. Canudo sees film not only as a new and modern art form, but also as part of the continuum of artistic tradition.

For Canudo, the status of film as an art form requires not only the combination of spatial and temporal arts into a new “total art,” but also that cinematic expression breaks away from merely recording reality and can function as a means of creative expression. On the one hand, Canudo emphasizes the idea of film as an art of the screen, in which the “screen artist” (écraniste) controls the reflections of light on the screen surface like a painter. On the other hand, Canudo recognizes the “documentary” capacity of film, but emphasizes that it should not be used merely to show things, but rather to utilize the “nature as character” (personnage-nature) or “force of ambience” (force-ambiance) as elements of drama.
