Digitalisation of the law and the everyday work of the lawyer
The authors examine the effects that the digitalisation of the law has on the daily work of lawyers. They that the use of information technology defines the work of lawyers more and more, and that it will eventually affect the societal role of the legal profession. What does it mean to be a good lawyer in the 2020s? Research on digitalisation and the future of professions has been carried out in the legal field for decades, especially internationally. In Finland, however, there is a lack of research on the legal profession and digitalisation in the national context. Finland, a small Nordic legal culture where especially in the public sector there is notable interest in digitalisation and new work practices, can differ as a context from Europe-focused and US-focused international research. The authors examine the results established in international research and their explanatory power in the context of Finnish legal work, by way of comparison with the results of an indicative 2018 survey by the University of Helsinki Legal Tech Lab, in collaboration with the Finnish Bar Association and the Association of Finnish Lawyers. The results of the qualitative comparison suggest that the digitalisation of the everyday work of lawyers in Finland follows international trends, though the results are purely indicative. Finally, the authors tie together the increasing use of digital tools and practices with the changing meaning of expertness, as well as the professional identity of lawyers and their societal role.
