Constructing Uncertainty through News Framing

This article examines from a news translational perspective how narratives are constructed in the Finnish news outlet Helsingin Sanomat when reporting on the European Parliament election and subsequent snap parliamentary elections in France in the summer of 2024. The focus is on how the media portrays the Other in terms of news framing. The study adopts an imagological approach and a broad conception of translation, also encompassing its intralingual and intersemiotic forms. A multimodal critical discourse analysis, combined with a discursive news value approach focusing on consonance and impact, is employed to examine how the outlet used textual and visual framing mechanisms. The corpus consists of 35 articles from the HS online archive published between 23 May and 9 July. The analysis reveals a multifaceted representation of France and a strong focus on the French far-right party and its potential rise. The selected topics, combined with terminological choices and juxtapositions of contradictory national and cultural imagery and stereotypes create a feeling of uncertainty regarding the outcome of the elections and its potential impact on EU’s, and consequently, Finland’s stability.
