This article discusses the benefits and challenges of co-translation in the teaching of literary non-fiction translation at the university level, focusing on co-translation both as a translation process and as a learning method. The case study concerns a course in which students co-translated a literary-philosophical essay: their translation commentaries are used to determine how co-translation was reflected in the decision-making process, in what kinds of problems co-translation was particularly useful, and how the students experienced the co-translation as a process. The results highlight the pedagogical advantages of this working method while also emphasizing the importance of text selection for the purposefulness of such a project in the context of translation education. They also emphasize the importance of building a shared understanding of all levels of meaning within a text before translating for a successful translation.
