Suomen antropologi news: manuscripts in Finnish, essay peer-review, online first publication and special issue launch

Dear authors, reviewers and readers of Suomen antropologi: Journal of the Finnish Anthropological Society,
to celebrate our journal’s 50th anniversary, we are delighted to share some exciting news.

1. You can now submit articles and essays to our journal also in Finnish!

We will continue publishing primarily in English, as we want the journal to remain an arena for international scholarly dialogue. However, we also recognise the desire of many anthropologists who speak Finnish fluently to publish their research in this language; the need for high-quality anthropological materials in Finnish for students at Finnish universities; and that for a language to remain dynamic as a language of academic thought requires it be used. We warmly invite Finnish anthropologists, or anthropologists who have conducted their research in Finnish, to submit their work to us for consideration. All pieces written in Finnish will undergo the same peer review process as do pieces in English. (See our submission guidelines)

2. Starting from our next issue, all essays published in Suomen antropologi will be peer reviewed!

Up till now, some essays published in Suomen antropologi have undergone external peer-review using a double-open or single-open review protocol, while others have only been reviewed by our editors. To elevate the status of essay writing, to acknowledge the work of the commentators, and to encourage authors who need peer reviewed publications to still try their hand at writing in a more essaystic style, we will from now on have all essays undergo double blind peer review. Essays will be reviewed by at least one external reviewer using a double-blind review protocol, whereas research articles are peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers.

3. Suomen antropologi will start to publish peer-reviewed texts, i.e. articles and essays, as "online first" when the texts are ready for publication, after which they will be assigned to the next issue to be published.

4. Finally, on Wednesday 26.08.2026 there is an online Special issue launch and discussion event by the guest-editors of our current issue "(Un)relating and (Un)learning with More-Than-Humans during Ethnographic Practice"

This special issue explores the interactions, negotiations, and engagements established with more-than-human actors as an integral part of the co-production of knowledge. The contributions ask how more-than-human actors may guide, shape, or hinder the production of knowledge, how they enter ethnographic research processes and research practices, and how researchers can engage with them ethically. Addressing diverse beings including plants, animals, microbes, and material entities, the authors develop relational more-than-human methodological perspectives that challenge understandings of humans as separate from other forms of life and existences. The event is chaired by the guest-editors Pirjo Kristiina Virtanen and Minna Opas and it will feature short presentations by the authors Taynã Tagliati, Pirjo Kristiina Virtanen, Beth A. Conklin, Eric Michael Kelley, Silvio Sanches Barreto Bará, Siran Liang with Sarah Green and Carl Mika serving as the discussants.
