How to Milk a Yak: Embodied Learning with Yaks in Practice

Abstract

This essay is based on an ethnographic study at a self-subsistence-oriented yak herding village in Tibet (Tibetan Autonomous Region, China). I demonstrate how the social-biophysical profile and the life history of the researcher influences the research process–that is, how the individuality of the researcher’s body (e.g., gender, physical fitness, breastfeeding experience, and upbringing) limits and creates opportunity when engaging in work with yaks. Through the bodily engagement with yaks during milking, I argue that learning requires skills as well as a mutual learning process between species. This process illuminates how the bodily engagement with more-than-humans, which extends beyond linguistic and visual senses, creates spaces for unexpected (un-)learnings with animals. Furthermore, this essay shows that learning does not necessarily occur in the ethnographic present, but can also happen afterwards.
