Optimism and etymology
the case of PU *ćoma- ‘get tired’ and “Late” Proto-Indo-Iranian loan etymologies in Proto-Uralic

In Uralic studies, the stance towards loan etymologies has often been tacitly overly optimistic. Words with loan etymologies that contain no obvious objections are treated as de facto loanwords. There has been a heavy emphasis on phonology and passing the phonological muster has been the deciding factor in determining the credibility of a loan etymology. This article discusses the problems associated with the optimistic approach by examining more closely the cognate set reconstructed for Proto-Uralic as *ćoma- ‘get tired’, its Indo-Iranian loan etymology, and other loan etymologies that make up the so-called “Late” Proto-Indo-Iranian loanword layer (Häkkinen 2023).
The article demonstrates that by shifting the focus away from phonology towards semantics, derivational details, and the context in which the words are used, noteworthy alternative etymological scenarios emerge and, in many cases, serious counterarguments against either the Uralic cognate relationship or the Indo-Iranian loan etymologies can be levied. It is concluded that the evidence for a “Late” Indo-Iranian loanword layer that presumably reached a still unified Proto-Uralic is on much shakier etymological grounds than one might suspect when focusing primarily on phonological substitutions. The main argument in the article is that etymology should be approached with inherent skepticism extended to all aspects of etymology, and when etymologies are used to inform historical scenarios, the etymological proof itself should be ironclad on all fronts.
