Abstrakti

This article examines civil-military relations in Finland by applying conceptual analysis and normative methodology. I contend that these relations are instrumental in providing comprehensive Finnish national defence and societal security solutions. I duly consider the action competence model and concept as a key tool for balancing and enhancing civil–military connections. In addressing the research issue, I also draw on international military ethics research and analyse fragmentation, which has been identified as a central problem. The article also expands on the significance of fragmentation for the contemporary and increasingly conflicted relationship between humans and nature. Finally, I point out the significance of working on identity in order to balancing civil-military relations by utilising multidisciplinary resources that are seemingly little known in the military sciences.
