Author Guidelines

Näyttämö ja tutkimus accepts submissions of peer-reviewed research articles, reviews, essays,
book reviews, topical commentaries, various texts presenting research and researchers, as well as lectiones praecursorie speeches from public defences of dissertations.

For the section-specific guidelines for different text types please see below. The editorial process is conducted via the journal.fi platform.

Submitted texts (excluding lectiones praecursoriae and book reviews, see below for details in regard to them) must be accompanied by an abstract in the language of the manuscript. The abstract shall not exceed 1 000 characters in length and must function as an independent text.

Published articles must additionally include an abstract in Finnish and/or English (articles in Finnish or Swedish require an English abstract; articles in English require a Finnish abstract).
Authors are responsible for translating and proofreading their abstracts. An English translation of
the article title must also be provided.

In addition to the abstract, authors must supply at least 5 keywords in both Finnish and English. All texts, except lectiones praecursoriae must include a title. Titles may be two-part. Authors are also asked to provide a short biographical note (maximum 300 characters).

Manuscripts submitted for consideration must be polished in content and style. If the submitted
text does not comply with the author guidelines, it will be returned to the author for revision before it proceeds further in the process.

Näyttämö ja tutkimus aims to inform authors of acceptance or rejection within 4–6 weeks of submission (excluding general holiday periods). Print ready proofs will be checked by authors prior to publication.

Formatting guidelines

Your manuscript should use Times New Roman or another standard font throughout the text, font size 12. Line spacing should be 1.5. Do not use automatic spacing between paragraphs.

Headings should be bolded and separated from the preceding text by an extra line break. Note that special formatting such as style presets (Heading, Title, etc.) or automatic numbering should not be used. Do not hyphenate words. Do not use ALL CAPS, including in headings.

Quotations longer than two sentences must be fully indented. Indented quotations do not use quotation marks, nor should they be italicized.

Before submission, ensure (e.g., using the “show all characters” function in your word processor) that spacing between words, sentences and after punctuation marks, as well as at the ends of paragraphs, is correct.

Finnish-language texts should use Finnish-style quotation marks (“tassut”). Single quotation
marks (') are used only in special cases, such as quotations within quotations.

Omissions within quotations are indicated with two en dashes in brackets: [--]. Author insertions are placed in brackets: [for example].

Footnotes (not endnotes) with Arabic numerals are used for references (see “References and Bibliography” below).

Abbreviations (e.g., “mm.,” “s.o.,” “esim.”) are not used in the main text but may be used in footnotes.

Foreign words (corps de ballet) and terms or emphases may be italicized
upon first occurrence. Titles of works (Crash) are italicized always.

In quotations, the author’s own emphases must be distinguished from
those of the original source in the footnotes (“emphasis in the original” or “emphasis added”).

An en dash (–) without spaces is used to express duration or ranges, not a hyphen (-). For example: 5–6 litres; in the 1920–1930s; a 15–20-kilometre journey; 70–80-year-olds.

The en dash is also used as an em dash; hyphens continue to be used normally, including in names
(Anna-Kaisa; Risto-setä; Kuningas lähtee Ranskaan -opera).

Visual and audiovisual material

You may attach photographs, diagrams or audiovisual material that substantively supports the article. All materials must be directly relevant to the content.

Video material relating to submitted texts will be published on the journal’s Vimeo channel. However, please submit videos along with the text in the Journal.fi service. Vimeo supports just about any kind of video file, including these common formats: MP4, MOV, WMV, AVI, and FLV.

The image resolution must be at least 150 ppi. The recommended format for image files is .jpg/.tiff.

For layout purposes, descriptions and captions for images, diagrams, and audiovisual elements shall be written in a separate paragraph within the body text, beginning with a hashtag (#), without indentation. Do not write these texts in italics or bold. To ensure accessibility, also include an alternative text (alt text) for the images. For more information, see e.g. the following: https://op.europa.eu/en/web/accessibility/trancript-alternative-text.

The authors are responsible for clearing copyright in accordance with the law as it applies in Finland. The authors are wholly liable for any possible compensation or legal costs arising in regard to the usage of copyrighted material they submit to the journal.

Citations and reference list

Näyttämö ja tutkimus uses a referencing system in which citation information corresponding to the Chicago Manual of Style Author–Date format is given in footnotes. For examples, please see the previous issue.

Reference list is based on the Chicago Manual of Style. According to current guidelines, place of publication is no longer required.

Unlike the standard CMoS system, references are given as footnotes (not endnotes). Footnotes include Author year, page (information without parentheses, formatted as CMoS would format an in-text citation). For more information please see: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html → Author-Date tab.

Sources in a single footnote are separated with semicolons. Note that a footnote always ends with a period.

Examples:
Mallinen 2019, 252.
Mallinen 2019, 252; 2022; Tutkija 2024, 253–255.

Page ranges are written in full (253–255, not 253–5). The same applies to year ranges (1992–1998).

Performance:

Director/choreographer of the work. Year. Title of the work. Group that produced the work. Venue. Place and date. [Other contributors as relevant to the research.]

Archival sources:

References to archival sources should be indicated in a footnote in the following form:

In the reference list, use the following style:
