Industrial relics in Pirkanmaa

There has been relatively little research on industrial history relics using archaeological methods in Finland. Inventories and excavations have been made from the 1980s onwards. In the industry-rich province of Pirkanmaa, research on industrial history relics has only been growing since the late 1990s. To date, relics in 16 sites have been archaeologically documented. By contrast, almost 50 pre-industrial workshops and production sites are known. Industrial relics represent all of the significant industries of the province. The most notable from the perspective of industrial history are the ore mine of Haveri (in Viljakkala, Ylöjärvi), the Tampella blast furnace and the remains of the Frenckell paper factory (in Tampere), the Nuutajärvi glass factory and the Kalkkimäki quarry and lime burning site (in Urjala) and the Niklasfors bloomery (in Kuru, Ylöjärvi). The qualities and the present state of Pirkanmaa industrial relics are examined through two examples.
