Abstract

Dear Readers,

As the Nordic summer continues to inspire us with it long days, renewed energy, and spirit of collaboration, it is a pleasure to introduce this latest issue of Tribologia. Summer time offers a natural moment for reflection—on progress made, ideas exchanged, and the evolving challenges that unite our community. This year, that reflection is especially enriched by the momentum and inspiration generated at Nordtrib 2026.

Held in an atmosphere of both scientific rigor and warm collegiality, Nordtrib 2026 once again demonstrated the strength and vitality of the tribology community in the Nordic region and beyond. The conference brought together researchers, industry experts, and emerging talents to share insights across a broad spectrum of topics—from advanced surface engineering and lubrication strategies to sustainability-driven innovations and digitalization in tribological systems.

Among the highlights was the strong emphasis on sustainable tribology, reflecting a growing commitment to reducing environmental impact through improved efficiency, novel materials, and environmentally friendly lubricants. Several keynote lectures and technical sessions showcased how tribology plays a critical role in extending component lifetimes, lowering energy consumption, and enabling greener technologies—from wind energy systems to electrified transport.

Another notable theme was the integration of data-driven approaches and artificial intelligence in tribological research. Presentations explored how machine learning and advanced modeling tools are transforming our ability to predict wear, optimize lubrication regimes, and design surfaces with unprecedented precision. These developments signal a new era in which traditional experimental expertise is complemented by powerful computational capabilities.

Nordtrib 2026 also provided an excellent platform for young researchers, whose contributions were both inspiring and forward-looking. Their enthusiasm and fresh perspectives are essential to ensuring the continued evolution of our field. The vibrant discussions during poster sessions and technical exchanges underscored the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and openness in advancing tribological science.

This issue of Tribologia reflects many of these themes. Readers will find contributions that bridge fundamental research and industrial application, highlighting both the depth and breadth of modern tribology.

As we look ahead to the rest of the year, the insights gained and connections formed during the conference will undoubtedly continue to influence ongoing work and future initiatives. An important tradition of Tribologia is to disseminate the outcomes of Nordtrib conferences to a wider audience. In line with this, we are pleased to continue publishing selected contributions in upcoming issues.

We hope that this issue provides both inspiration and practical value to your work. Whether you are revisiting ideas from the summer months or preparing for the next phase of your research, may it serve as a reminder of the collective strength of our community and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.

Wishing you a productive summer time and inspiring return to your autumn projects.
