Still, participation in the occasional offices has significantly declined: only 62% of children were baptized in 2019 (89% in 2000). The aim of this article is to analyse the role of religious ceremonies among young adults and reasons to baptize or not baptize one’s own child. The article is based on a survey which was sent to the parents of preschool children (0–6 years) (N=1036). It appeared that the main motives for baptism are related to tradition and custom. Various religious reasons emerged as having significant role for not baptizing: parents were not members of the church, did not feel connected to it or did not consider themselves believers.</p> 2021-09-07T00:00:00+03:00 Copyright (c) 2021 Uskonto, katsomus ja kasvatus https://journal.fi/ukk/article/view/110893 Kaste ja kasvatus lapsen käsitteen valossa 2021-08-18T15:06:53+03:00 Eriikka Jankko eriikka.jankko@evl.fi <p><strong>Baptism and religious upbringing in the light of the concept of the child </strong></p> <p>The aim of this article is to examine how the logically different meanings of the term “child” direct different conceptions of being a child, as well as conceptions of baptism and religious upbringing. Martin Luther’s ideas, that enlarge the use of concepts “gift” and “child”, are utilized to challenge the current discussion that high­lights the child’s right to choose baptism and religious upbringing. The concept of the child refers both to age- and development-based conceptions and to biological, social and psychological relations of being a child. The sermons collected from the Finnish Lutheran sermon database Digipostilla (KotimaaPro) are compared to Finns’ per­ceptions of baptism, examining the differences and similarities in the conceptual­ization of baptisms. The sermons were categorized as follows: communality, par­ticipation in church activities, customs and traditions, obtaining a name, faith and following Jesus, the childhood of God, blessing and grace of God, and salvation and eternal life. Finns’ perceptions and the teachings concerning baptism were largely similar. The materials also complemented each other, as Finns emphasized baptism as an opportunity and sermons emphasized it as a task. The article is structured chronological­ly, to determine a line of development of hymn content over the period of 80 years. The idea of completing baptismal initiation, according to Pietism, appears in the confirmation hymns of the 1938 hymnal, although the subject has been theologically controversial since the late 19th century. In later hymnals, the theme is replaced by the notion of confirmation as accompanying young people on their life journey. This theological transition can be argued by the theology of creation.
