Tulla-futuuri ilmestyi suomen kirjakieleen 1700-luvulla. Sitä on pidetty epäsuomalaisena ja ruotsista lainattuna. Konstruktiolla on kuitenkin perustansa suomen murteissa. Tässä tutkimuksessa kartoitetaan tulla-futuurin taustaa tarkastelemalla tulla V-mAAn -konstruktion toteutumista eri-ikäisissä teksteissä koko vanhan kirjasuomen kaudella 1800-luvun alkuun asti.
Lähes kaikki aikomusta tai tarkoitusta ilmaisevalla MA-infinitiivin illatiivilla täydennetyn tulla-verbin käyttö vanhimmassa aineistossa ilmaisee spatiaalista liikettä, mikä estää futuuritulkinnan. Tästä syystä kieliopillistumiskehityksen kannalta keskeiseksi nousee tulla-saapumisverbin muutospolkua edustava become-haara, jota ensimmäiset futuurikandidaatit edustavat. Subjektientiteetin kokeman muutoksen päätepistettä saattoi jo Agricolalla edustaa paitsi translatiivimuotoinen nomini (tulla rikkaa|ksi) myös illatiivimuotoinen infinitiivi (tulla ymmärtä|mä|än). Samantyyppinen kehitys on johtanut myös ruotsin komma (till) att V ja viron saama Vma -konstruktioiden futuuristumiseen inkoatiivisen eli alkamista tai tilaan joutumista merkitsevän välivaiheen kautta. Tulla-saapumisverbin oma semantiikka on osoittautunut otolliseksi naapurikielten kaltaisen aspektuaalisen futuurin syntymiselle.
Where did the Finnish tulla future come from?
The future construction with the verb tulla ‘to come, become’ appeared in the Finnish literary language in the 1700s. It has traditionally been considered a non-Finnish linguistic item copied from Swedish. However, the construction has its basis in Finnish dialects. This study maps the background of the tulla future by examining the realisation of the construction tulla V-mAAn in texts of different ages throughout the period of Old Literary Finnish until the early 1800s.
In the oldest texts, almost all uses of the verb tulla, complemented with the MA infinitive illative, express spatial motion, which prevents the future interpretation. The only non-spatial uses of the construction represent the become meaning of the verb tulla and denote movement occurring on the path of change which for this reason was deemed crucial for the grammaticalisation process. The endpoint of the change experienced by the subject entity could be represented not only by a translative marked noun (tulla rikkaa|ksi ‘to become rich’) but also by the illative marked infinitive (tulla ymmärtä|mä|än ‘to become someone who understands’). The same type of development through the inchoative phase also led to the futurisation of the Swedish komma (till) att V and the Estonian saama V-ma constructions. The semantics of the venitive verb tulla turned out to be favourable for the emergence of an aspectual future similar to that of neighbouring languages.
In its early stages, the grammatical future favoured non-human subjects which were on the threshold of externally controlled change, and the construction allowed a wide range of verbs in the V position.
In modern Finnish, the tulla future can also indicate a strong intention, but based on this study, this looks like a later development. The use of tulla implies that the process is already in motion, and the resultativity of the movement verb, i.e. the arrival, corresponds to the beginning of a relation or process expressed by the infinitive. This is also the reason for the connotation of inevitability or fate attached to the tulla future. Due to its inchoative connotations like ‘ending up (in) V-ing’ and ‘beginning (to) V’, the tulla future can be considered a ‘futurish’ tense rather than a ‘pure future’ tense.
