Translated Finnish as language variant: untypical syntactical and lexical features (englanti)

TRANSLATED FINNISH AS A LANGUAGE VARIANT: UNTYPICAL SYNTACTICAL AND LEXICAL FEATURES

Although translated Finnish has an important role in the Finnish language community, as a language variant it was little studied until the late 1990s. Whenever translated Finnish has been studied, it has generally been from a very normative perspective and has focused on aspects of translationese, which have been viewed as undesirable.

The article examines translated Finnish descriptively by comparing it with non-translated Finnish, i.e. with language that is not the result of the translation process. The writers highlight the essence of translated Finnish with the aid of two studies, one on certain non-finite syntactic constructions and the other on the degree modifier hyvin very. Although these linguistic features are quite different from each other, the two studies are linked by a common theoretical basis and the hypothesis concerning the untypical patterns of translated Finnish, and some of the methods and data are also common. They form part of a more extensive corpus-based study of translated Finnish and translation universals.

Both case studies support the hypothesis that translated Finnish has certain special features: in the analysis of the infinitive structures and the degree modifier there were frequencies and patterns that are untypical of non-translated Finnish. The analysis showed that the source language influences the frequency of occurrence of various linguistic features and their structure in translated Finnish. Furthermore, the studies indicate that translated Finnish also appears to be simpler in its grammatical structures and lexical combinations than non-translated Finnish.
