---

Abstract

The methods used in the teaching of a second language should closely follow the students’ learning process and respond to the linguistic challenges that the student will face outside the classroom. In this article, the authors consider what kind of learning environments will empower students and help them become a member of their linguistic community; what kinds of exercises and learning situations will best help the student learn effectively; and how best to encourage the student to invest in the learning process itself, focusing in particular on the elements of ownership, agency, identity, and interaction.

The authors examine the pedagogical development of the teaching of Finnish as a second language by identifying a number of aspects which have hitherto often been overlooked in the field and its associated research: the socio-cultural perspective on learning environments; the notion of functional learning; and the use of learning exercises as participatory and goal-oriented action. The authors focus on the teaching of linguistic structures and examine exercise models typical in the tradition of teaching Finnish as a second language from the perspective of what these exercises ask students to do and on what linguistic levels students are expected to focus in their language processing. The article also considers the ways in which exercises can be constructed in order more effectively to prepare students for linguistic situations outside the classroom. The principle behind this is one of constructive thought: descriptions of linguistic structures and the order in which these structures are taught should focus on language use and on the models and patterns that recur most frequently in common usage. The student should be taught to make his / her own observations in a communicative environment in such a way that the form, meaning and use of the language are properly balanced. Ideally, learning situations should be constructed around authentic actions that will be of relevance to the student. Only then can they provide students with the tools that enable them to communicate and interact in a linguistic community.
}, number={3}, journal={Virittäjä}, author={Aalto, Eija and Mustonen, Sanna and Tukia, Kaisa}, year={2009}, month={syys} }
