At the focus of this study are requests in which the official either asks the client to say their number or to show a form of identification. The aim is to explore the form of such requests and to examine factors that account for the variation that occurs. Lappalainen begins from the assumption that this has become a routinized action, which may account for the conventionalization of the form; the form of request chosen depends on the interactive context in question and on certain extra-linguistic factors. Methodologically, the research is an example of conversation analysis, though the consideration of variation in the format of these requests is also examined from the perspective of variation analysis.

Analysis of these identification requests reveals that there are four primary formulae for asking for this information: one in which the official asks the client to show a form of identification, and three in which they ask the client to say their number out loud. With the exception of requests in the imperative (e.g. Sanoppa henkiltunnus, lit. Say your identification number), these requests are generally presented in the form of questions (e.g. Annatko henkiltunnuksen, lit. Will you give me your identification number? or Miks sun henkiltunnus on, lit. What is your identification number?). Common to all of these formulas is that there is no variation in the predicate verb, the word order is the same in all of them, and each request form consists of a limited number of standard elements. Another common feature is the use of the second-person verb form, referring to the client. In the corpus of material, the conditional mood occurs only twice, and the modal verb voida (can) is not used at all. Lappalainen sees these typical elements as reflecting the unproblematic, routinized nature of this action. Indeed, the routine character of requesting the clients identity number or card can be seen in the interaction between the official and the client: clients very rarely question the officials request and, in most cases, the act of giving ones identification number or looking for a form of identification follows the officials request without any significant delays.

The relatively small size of the corpus of material restricts the ability to draw firm conclusions regarding regional and / or social variation in these requests. However, Lappalainens observation that the precise selection of format may depend on the officials regional background, the age of the client, and the question of whose identification the official is checking presents material for further research. Examination of the relationship between variation and the specific interactive context seems to suggest that the format of the request is tied up with the situation as a whole, for instance, the sequential position of the request itself.

This research is part of a larger research project investigating interactive practices in customer-service situations, coordinated by the Research Institute for the Languages of Finland. The corpus of material for this research consists of around 300 video-recorded customer-service situations at Finnish Social Security offices collected in Tavastia (Western Finland), Northern Karelia (Eastern Finland), Southern Lapland, and the Helsinki area.

Hanna Lappalainen

- - - - - - - - - - - -

Kelan virkailijoiden henkiltunnuspyynnt. Tutkimus rutiininomaisista toiminnoista

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan yht Kelan asiointikeskusteluissa toistuvasti esiintyv toimintoa, henkiltunnuksen pyytmist. Tutkimuskohteena ovat sellaiset virkailijoiden esittmt pyynnt, joilla he joko pyytvt asiakasta sanomaan henkiltunnuksensa (ns. sanomispyynnt) tai nyttmn henkiltodistusta (ns. nyttmispyynnt). Tavoitteena on selvitt, millaisia nm pyynnt ovat muodoltaan ja mitk seikat selittvt niiss esiintyv variaatiota. Lhtkohtana on, ett kyseess on rutiinistunut toiminta, mik ilmenee pyyntjen muodon kiteytyneisyyten; se, mik pyynttyyppi kulloinkin valitaan, liittyy sek vuorovaikutustoimintaan ett kielenulkoisiin seikkoihin. Metodisesti tutkimus edustaa keskustelunanalyysia, mutta pyynniss esiintyv muotovaihtelua tarkastellaan mys variaationtutkimuksen nkkulmasta.

Henkiltunnuspyyntjen analyysi osoittaa, ett henkiltunnuksen pyytmiseen on kiteytynyt nelj ptyyppi, joista yhdell pyydetn asiakasta nyttmn henkiltodistus ja kolmella muulla sanomaan henkiltunnus. Imperatiivimuotoisia sanomispyyntj (esim. sanoppa henkiltunnus) lukuun ottamatta pyynnt esitetn kysymysmuotoisilla lausumilla (esim. annatko henkiltunnuksen; miks sun henkiltunnus on).

Tutkimus liittyy Kotimaisten kielten tutkimuskeskuksessa asiointitilanteiden vuorovaikutuskytnteit tarkastelevaan tutkimushankkeeseen. Tmn tutkimuksen aineisto koostuu lhes 300 videoidusta Kelan asiointikeskustelusta, jotka on kertty Sydn-Hmeest, Pohjois-Karjalasta, Perpohjasta ja Helsingist.

Hanna Lappalainen

ER -
