Several new studies suggest that it is good for one’s health to visit museums and enjoy culture. Today, museums have an important role as social, available forums and multifaceted educational environments. In this article, pedagogue Hannele Tenhovuori from Borgå Museum discusses the contemporary development of culture education in Finland.
When schools and museums have co-operated, both the substance of the education and the teaching methods have in recent years gained increasing attention. In 2014, The Finnish National Agency for Education drafted the base for a new curriculum for elementary education. In the new curriculum, holistic tuition plays an important part. Fundamentally this implies that the schools’ cultural activities include collaboration with local professionals within the cultural industries.
