Security research: Disciplines and points of departure of multidisciplinary security research –article discusses the common scientific, theoretical and conceptual roots of political science, administrative science, international relations and military science in the fields of security research. The first challenge for multidisciplinary research is to find and agree the basic common concepts which could be applicable for empirical research in most disciplines. The article deals with the “Polizeywissenschaft” as an illustration of the roots of the current curricula of security management and governance, tailored for Finnish senior police officers, at the School of Management, University of Tampere. It is argued that the common concepts are state, administration (and governance) and order. Today, one of the important concepts is legitimacy (of, for instance, state building, capacity building, order and peace keeping). The article suggests that the concept of public value could be applicable for multidisciplinary security research, for instance in order to examine the outcomes of multiagency cooperation between the police, military and other authorities.
