Abstrakti

During the presidency of Donald J. Trump the United States has in many ways taken distance from the American security political tradition that has been dominant in the post-WWII period. Before the Trump administration the basic tenets of the U.S. foreign and security policies were the leadership of the free world in the name of alliance solidarity and global furthering of the democratic values. The Trump administration has emphasized “America first” -policy and American nationalistic interests. The administration perceives the world scene more in terms of a zero-sum game than its predecessors. On the level of political values the administration emphasizes also the themes of national pride and national reputation, on the level of means the themes of military power, national economic interests and tougher immigration policy. On the level of political style and rhetoric the administration has introduced its own standards, characterized in several cases by drama and unpredictability. However, the administration has not made any substantially new openings in its military strategy, nor has it shown any actual tendency of interventionist adventurism. Even the strengthening of the American military force is nothing exceptional, but fits well within the long national tradition. In any case, the personal characteristics of the president, together with the meagre foreign political experience of the administration, create constant political risks and unpredictability. These are very much present in the administration’s policies in the Middle East and the Korean peninsula.
