The objective of this article is to present a new methodological approach to the field of military sciences – namely the egocentric network -interview, which is a qualitative technique of Social Network Analysis (SNA). The article discusses the history of SNA focusing especially on its application on the field of learning research. The use of egocentric network -interview is illustrated with an empirical research example. The example is an empirical case-study concerning workplace learning of Non-commissioned officers (NCO) in three companies of one Finnish Army’s unit. An egocentric network -interview was conducted with the NCOs. The visualized egocentric network-data was analyzed qualitatively. The results of the research example suggest that personal networks were central to the learning of NCOs and the networks varied considerably. The possible applications of egocentric network -interview within military sciences are discussed and some central aspects important for conducting network-research are highlighted.
