Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in LaTeX or LyX (remember to include figures and bibliography), Open Document Text, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.

An initial submission may be in PDF.
  • All URL addresses in the text (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca) are activated and ready to click.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • The text has had the authors' names removed. If an author is cited, "Author" and year are used in the bibliography and footnotes, instead of author's name, paper title, etc. The author's name has also been removed from the document's Properties using the word processor's menu option for this.

Author Guidelines

To start your submission process, you should first register a user account on the OJS system. If you need help with this, contact the editor-in-chief at riikka.kyro (at) aalto.fi. You may also send your manuscript directly by email; the editor-in-chief will create an account for you and enter the manuscript there. For your submission, you can use either Word (or OpenOffice), or LaTeX (or LyX) for drafting your manuscript. Please remember to anonymise (remove all metadata) the document. Format description For articles submitted for a regular issue of NJSR, the technical editor will do the final formatting from word processor document submitted by you; so getting the format precisely right is not critical. For the benefit of those required to prepare camera-ready manuscripts (but also useful for others, as it allows you to see the final appearance of your paper) we give here the formatting rules that apply:

  1. The font to be used is Times New Roman, font size 11 pts. Paragraphs are normally indented.
  2. The width of the text is 12.6 cm; the height of a page of text is 20.3 cm (without the page header). You may prepare for a paper size of A4, in which case the left and top margins are 2.2 cm (the page header falls within the top margin).
  3. The items to be typeset in a smaller font use 10 pts. These are abstract, key words, footnotes, figure and table captions, the references in the reference list, the "Acknowledgement(s)" block, page headers, and the submitted/revised/accepted block on the first page.
  4. Sections and subsections: like "2 Section", "2.1 Subsection". Section header bold, subsection header bold italic, sub-sub-section header italic. Size 11 points, normal line space between header and following text.
  5. Captions are centered and italicized, text "Figure 1. " bold and italic. Figure captions below figure, table captions above table. Also table content in smaller (10 pts) font.
  6. References are blocks with 1.5 line space in between. Citation format is author (year) or (author, year), depending on context.
  7. Affiliation is given as a numbered footnote to the author list, see examples.
  8. Make sure to write in correct, clear English, with well-formed, not too long, sentences. Use word breaks (hyphens) to keep inter-word spaces suitable.

Examples of formatted articles are at this address. Please verify that the graphical impression of your manuscript is similar. Common pitfalls Make sure line drawings are either as vector graphics, or in sufficiently high resolution. Make sure (Word) equations are editable, and not just included as graphics. Make sure the manuscript is suitable for double-blind reviewing. Remove your name also from 'Properties'. Of course the final manuscript should bear your name. Colour printing Note that colour printing is possible but leads to page charges. Please enquire.
