Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor has it been submitted to another publisher for consideration.
  • The text adheres to the Author Guidelines as stated on this website.
  • The author has read the Copyright Notice as diplayed on the journal website and agrees to the conditions.
  • The text does not exceed the standard word limit of 8000 words.
  • The submission file format is either .doc, .docx, or .rtf.
  • All authors are strongly recommended to use their Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID) or register an account.
  • All URLs (web addresses) are checked and marked with a date of last access.
  • Where available, DOI-signifiers have been provided for works cited.
  • All author identification information has been removed from the submission file(s), as well as from the document’s properties. No versions of the paper are available online.
  • The author remains responsible for proofreading incl. citation accuracy and for all statements of fact or opinion.
  • The author has cleared the copyright for any images, illustrations, graphs, or tables included in the submission.
  • The research meets guidelines on publication ethics and malpractice in the research field.

Professional proofreading services are provided for submissions accepted for publication.

Accepted types of submissions

Articles
Manuscripts should be written in English and submitted to the Chief Editors Minna Opas and Sofia Sjö. All manuscripts undergo peer review. Articles should not exceed 8.000 words (this includes references) and they should be accompanied by keywords and an abstract of no more than 200 words. Temenos has no publishing fees.

Authors should submit their manuscript as an electronic file in doc, docx or rtf-format via this website. If the article includes any special characters, fonts or linguistic signs, a printed version of the article should also be sent to the editors to the address mentioned in the "About" section.

It is the author's responsibility to obtain a written permission to reprint any material under copyright law and to supply such permission when submitting the manuscript. 

The publisher keeps regular electronic records of the key review information and documents related to the manuscripts accepted for the review process.

Review Articles
Manuscript for review articles should be submitted to the Chief Editors Minna Opas and Sofia Sjö. A Review article should not exceed 5.000 words. 

Book Reviews
Proposals for book reviews should be addressed to the Review Editor Alexandra Bergholm. The optimal length of a book review is 1300 words. Email: alexandra.bergholm@helsinki.fi

Author's contact information
All texts submitted should be accompanied by the contact information of the author including author's name, title, academic affiliation, postal address, telephone and fax number, and e-mail address.

 

Formatting standards

Temenos follows Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) Author-Date system. (From issue 1/2025 onward!)

Text
• Only two levels of subtitles should be used. The subtitles are not numbered.
• Abundant use of footnotes is not encouraged.
• Tables, figures and photographs should be of professional quality. All illustrations should be presented on separate sheets, titled, numbered and cited in the text.
• If special fonts / characters are used in the text, a proper font should be submitted to the editor with the manuscript.

Notes and references
References to publications should be included in the text (in-text citations), not in the footnotes. They should include the name of the author, year of publication and page number(s), e.g. (Blacker 1976, 17–18) or (Blacker 1976). References to web materials should be treated as printed references. In cases when the name of the author is unknown, the reference must be named. The address of the web page is never to be inserted in the text or in the footnotes, but always only in the list of references.

Footnotes can be used when there is a need for a secondary discussion. Please use the insert footnote -command when preparing the file.

Bibliography
The bibliography should be listed in full at the end of the manuscript and conform to the following examples (for more information, please see the Chicago Manual of Style (CMS) Author-Date system.

Photographs and other illustrations

Photographs accompanying articles that are accepted for publication must be at the resolution of 300 ppi or higher and should be in jpeg or tiff format. Line drawings and maps should be submitted at a resolution of 1200 ppi.

It is the author’s responsibility to obtain permission to reprint any material that is under copyright. Photographs are not to be inserted in the text file, but uploaded as supplementary files. No supplementary files need to be submitted until editors have indicated acceptance of the manuscript. The preferred place of the photograph in the text may be designated by the caption of the photograph, e.g., <Fig. 1 here>. The source of the illustration, name of the photographer, or other indication of the copyright must always be included in the caption of the illustration.

 

Ethics and dataa management

Publication ethics and malpractice

The author is committed to following ethical guidelines in his or her research field, for general instructions see "Responsible conduct of research and procedures for handling allegations of misconduct in Finland" issued by Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.

 

Research data management

Authors are encouraged to follow the FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) in their data management. When the nature of the data and the research process allow, it is recommended to open the data. At least the metadata should be open. The possibilities for data management and digital storage are dependent on ethical and juridical issues related to the nature of the data (especially sensitive data).

If you choose to implement the FAIR principles in your work, please consult the national and institutional guidelines relevant for your work. For example, for research conducted in Finland, the Finnish Social Science Data Archive (FSD) is recommended, or any other reliable national or international repository for data archiving which meet the criteria of permanent storage.

Articles

Temenos is a Nordic journal, which means our primary focus is on Nordic topics and researchers. Secondary aims are to publish articles from outside the Nordic context which deal with central methodological and theoretical themes, articles based on presentations given at conferences organised in the Nordic countries and special thematic issues.

Book Reviews

The journal welcomes proposals concerning newly published books in the field of religion to be reviewed. Scholars who want to submit reviews to the journal should contact the book review editor Alexandra Bergholm.
