Deutsches Lager Hanko 1942–1944. The Modern Conflict Archaeology and History of a German Second World War Transition Camp in Hanko, South Finland
Vol. 28 (2024)Jan Fast's dissertation delves into the history of a German transit camp for soldiers located in Tulliniemi, Hanko, during 1942–1944. Due to the near-complete absence of archival records, the history of the camp is explored through archaeological research, interviews, and photographs. By combining various sources, the study paints a picture of daily life in the camp and the German soldiers stationed next to the small Finnish town. The research on Tulliniemi in Hanko serves as a fresh example of conflict archaeology, a field currently enjoying widespread interest from both the academic community and the general public.

Celebrating 100 Years of Archaeology at the University of Helsinki. Past, Present, and Future
Vol. 27 (2023)The University of Helsinki's archaeology program celebrated its 100th anniversary in December 2023. To mark the occasion, researchers, educators, students, and friends of the discipline collaborated to create a commemorative volume, published in the Iskos series by the Finnish Antiquarian Society. This over 360-page work sheds light on the origins and development of archaeology education from the late 19th century to the present day, the program's internationalization, and the shifting focal points of teaching across decades. Additionally, the book includes more personal reflections and insights into studying archaeology and the profession itself.

Dwelling Forms and Settlement Patterns on Russia’s Kola Peninsula Northern Coast, 2300–1500 cal. BC
Vol. 26 No. 26 (2023)Prehistoric dwelling depressions began to be discovered along the coast of northern Norway in the 1930s, and by the 1960s, hundreds had been registered. Most of these dwellings date to the Late Stone Age (5000–1800 BCE) and the Early Metal Age (1800–0 BCE), although some originate from the Mesolithic Stone Age (9000–5000 BCE). In the early 1990s, a collaborative project between Norwegian and Russian archaeologists identified numerous similar dwelling depressions on the Kola Peninsula. The first modern archaeological excavation of a dwelling depression on the Kola Peninsula took place at Drozdovka Bay in northeastern Kola during 1994, 1998, and 2000 as part of the Norwegian-Russian collaboration. This book presents the project's findings and places them in a broader context as part of the archaeology of the Kola Peninsula and northern Norway.
