Abstract

Dear Readers,

In the intricate dance of surfaces in motion, tribology emerges as both a science and an art—an essential discipline that underpins the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of countless mechanical systems. From the silent glide of a prosthetic joint to the roaring power of a jet engine, tribological principles govern the interactions that define performance and longevity.

This issue brings together a diverse collection of insights, innovations, and investigations that reflect the evolving landscape of tribology. As materials become smarter, lubricants more sustainable, and simulations increasingly precise, the boundaries of what is possible continue to expand. Yet, at its core, tribology remains grounded in the fundamental understanding of friction, wear, and lubrication—phenomena as old as motion itself.

In addition to technical contributions, this issue also pays tribute to the lives and legacies of esteemed tribology professionals who have recently passed. Their pioneering work, mentorship, and dedication have left an indelible mark on the field. We honor their memory and celebrate the impact they have had on generations of researchers and engineers.

Dr. Seppo Kivioja was a respected figure in Finnish tribology, known for his work on friction, wear, and lubrication in mechanical systems. He co-authored foundational texts such as Tribologia – kitka, kuluminen ja voitelu, which has served as a cornerstone for tribology education in Finland. His commitment to both academic excellence and practical engineering applications made him a valued mentor and colleague. Dr. Kivioja’s legacy lives on through the many students and professionals he inspired.

Associate Professor Ion Marius Sivebæk was a leading researcher in polymer tribology and surface interactions, with a focus on slip resistance, elastomer behavior, and lubrication mechanisms. His prolific work at DTU spanned over 80 publications and numerous collaborative projects, contributing significantly to both theoretical understanding and industrial applications. Prof. Sivebæk was known for his interdisciplinary approach and his passion for advancing tribological science. His passing is a great loss to the international tribology community.

We are thrilled to announce that the next Nordic Symposium on Tribology (Nordtrib 2026) will take place in Tampere 9-12.6.2026. As one of the most anticipated gatherings in the tribology community, Nordtrib offers a vibrant platform for researchers, engineers, and industry leaders to share breakthroughs, explore emerging trends, and build lasting collaborations. Stay tuned for the official call for papers, keynote announcements, and registration details. Let’s shape the future of tribology—together.

As we look ahead to new challenges and opportunities in tribology, we are reminded that progress is built not only on innovation but also on the enduring contributions of those who came before us. May this issue serve as both a source of knowledge and a tribute to the spirit of collaboration, curiosity, and dedication that defines our field.

We thank all contributors, authors, reviewers, and readers for being part of this shared journey.

Enjoy reading our latest issue,
