This article looks at the multilingualism of Russian-speaking immigrants in Finland in terms of democracy. The main focus in the paper is on the possibilities of and constraints on the use of Finnish and Russian, competence in these languages, and their meaning for speakers of Russian in Finnish society. The article describes how these immigrants see their linguistic situation and possibilities of maintaining and developing different languages. Finally, conclusions are drawn on how democracy and language rights are carried out in integration of Russian-speaking immigrants into Finnish society. This article is based on two studies: a longitudinal case-study on young Russian-speaking immigrants and working age Russian-speaking migrants in the project “Transforming Professional Integration”. The data consist of thematic interviews with Russian-speaking migrants living in Finland. Principles of qualitative content analysis and narrative analysis have been applied in analyzing the data. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
