The present article deals with textual authorship in three kinds of Finnish online discussions, which differ in terms of registration policies, usage of names and pseudonyms and the technical construction of the discussions. The online discussions were analyzed from the point of view of how participants show their authorship in them. The results of the analysis combining computer-mediated discourse analysis and lexical-semantic analysis show that authorship is manifested through the continuum from the explicit to the implicit expressions. Participants in the online discussion manifest explicit authorship using for example singular first person nouns and other means that amplify their own interpretation and communication, whereas implicit authorship is manifested for example through citing text that someone else has written. These dimensions of authorship are also largely defined by the contexts of the online discussions, as participants on open discussion board where temporary pseudonyms are preferred possess less need for pointing out one’s own authorship and expertise than on discussion board where participants use more permanent pseudonyms or real names. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
