This paper investigates genre knowledge (i.e. understanding of the traits and norms of the text type or genre) of university students on the basis of critique texts produced during a university-level writing course (Finnish as mother tongue). The university students' genre knowledge of the critique genre is assessed from analysis of the titles of their critique texts (N = 139). The titles of the critique texts are classified into categories according to the function and form of the titles. The evaluative lexis of the titles is also examined. The results of the analysis indicate that the titles formed by the university students are not always successful and often do not meet the genre-specific traits of typical titles. A significant number of student-generated titles overemphasized the course-specific and task-specific context and thus failed to address the situational context of the task. The problems encountered in forming suitable titles can be seen as indicating a lack of genre knowledge. Effective title generation is, however, only one aspect of genre knowledge, and in the case under study, some knowledge of genre could be recognized in the form of rich evaluative lexis. It is concluded that genre knowledge is a very complex issue and should be examined by analyzing several aspects of the texts, not just the titles. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
