Abstract

The material for this study consists of hit song lyrics written down by hand in Swedish in a number of waxcloth notebooks during the years 1959 to 1963 by an informant from Ostrobothnia. The aim of the present study is to analyze whose voice is heard in the songs in the different phases of the communication that runs from the author/translator of the text to the singer and to the receiving audience. Specifically the presence of male and female components is considered in the different phases. Four hit song lyrics are empirically analyzed as regards the voices represented in them using a hypothetical communication model. The analysis shows that the communication in the texts moves on several different levels with different senders and receivers depending on which level in the communication the person who performs the analysis finds herself.
