Raija Siekkinen (1953–2004) was a Finnish author, who is known from her short stories and novelettes. In her works, the acts of speaking between the characters; the dialogue is often performed as problematic and unfluent. The spoken sentences are short and the characters seems to be suspicious of the use of words. I am writing my doctoral thesis of the themes of memory and remembering in Siekkinen´s short fiction. During this work I have noticed the acts of inner speech where a character reflects the role of the spoken words and their meaning in intersubjective communication and social relationships. In these acts, the characters also process the affectivity of their personal past. The speech about private memories and their sharing is often out of reach, which makes the memory communication problematic . In this article "Words and a border of speaking. The problematic communicative memory in the short fiction works of Raija Siekkinen" inner speech is illustrated as a character`s voice inside of the border of speaking, coming from an area of silence. The theoretical position for remembering and communicative memory comes from cultural memorystudies and from its discussions to literary representations of memory and the theme of metamemory. In this article the extracts from Siekkinen´s works are interpreted by close reading which aim is to understand the meanings which this inner speech is giving to social role of speaking and the position of the silent and how these inner speech acts reflect the complexity of the concept of the communicative memory. This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
