Abstract

This article examines the cognitive accessibility assessment work of online service websites in the Papunet assessment service of the Finnish Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (FAIDD). The research is linked to the project called Selkeästi meille, organized by the FAIDD and the Association of Kehitysvammatuki 57 ry. These organizations have strong experience in promoting equality and inclusion in society of people with intellectual disabilities and others with special needs in learning, understanding and communication. In both services, people with disabilities participate in the assessment work as experts by experience. This study sheds light on the accessibility assessment process, focusing on cognitive accessibility problems. The material of the study is based on a semi-structured focus group interview with accessibility experts working in mentioned organizations. It is analysed in the context of why evaluation work is important, what accessibility expertise means, and what methods are used in the work. The findings of the research show the committed attitude of the evaluators that communicates the importance of achieving accessibility and the desire to develop and use evaluation methods.
